Raquel Gonzalez had an incredible breakout moment at WWE NXT TakeOver: WarGames in 2020, as she pinned NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai to win the eponymous match. On Sunday, Gonzalez and Shirai will be on the same team at WWE NXT WarGames, and their overall group is an all-star lineup. “Big Mami Cool” and “The Genius of the Sky” are former NXT Women’s Champions. They’ll be joined by Kay Lee Ray, who helds the record for the longest-reign as the NXT UnK Women’s Champion, and Cora Jade, a rising star who pinned NXT Women’s Champion Mandy Rose on the November 23 episode of WWE NXT 2.0.
In an interview with ComicBook ahead of the WarGames event on Sunday, Gonzalez shared her thoughts on this clash of loaded teams. She pointed to Jade as someone she expects to showcase her “aggression” and “passion” as a performer on Sunday.
“I’m really excited about my teammate Cora Jade because I feel like in the past few weeks, she has really stepped up as a newbie and as a newcomer, but she’s done it in the right way, in a way that she’s been seen as this underdog or she’s been seen as this younger, more shy kind of a girl, but she has a lot of aggression in her,” Gonzalez said. “She has a lot of passion in her and I think she has a lot of fight in her too, and I think everyone’s really going to see that this weekend at WarGames on the 5th.”
To elaborate, the former NXT Women’s Champion noted that Jade could potentially have the kind of breakout moment that she enjoyed at last year’s WarGames event. She explained that she believes Jade has what it takes to step up in the same way. “Big Mami Cool” also highlighted her teammates’ respective résumés.
“I feel like last year for WarGames, it was my first WarGames… so I kind of felt like the underdog in a sense, and to come out victorious at the end for my team, I felt like I stepped it up for them,” Gonzalez said. “So I’m looking forward to seeing that from Cora, and I feel like she does have that in her and I’m glad because she has a great team.
“She has a team of ex-Champions, NXT UK’s longest-reigning champion, KLR, NXT Champion, Io Shirai, the Genius of the Sky and you never know what to expect from her. Is she going to throw herself in a trash can again from the top of the game? Maybe.”
Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see which star will have a breakout moment this year; WWE NXT WarGames will stream on Peacock/WWE Network at 8 p.m. EST, amd WrestleZone will have full coverage of the show as it airs.
