Ilja Dragunov wants to make the impossible possible by beating WALTER, something that Pete Dunne has never done. Dragunov attempted to prove his point on the August 10 episode of NXT because he took on “The Bruiserweight” in singles action in the main event.
This bout came to be because Dunne interrupted the NXT UK star to state that Dragunov should be thanking him for his career, asit was “The Bruiserweight” who established the NXT UK brand. Dragunov noted that Dunne couldn’t get the job done against WALTER before he emphasized his intent to do so at NXT TakeOver 36. He then challenged Dunne to a match later in the evening.
In the main event, Dunne did his best type of joint manipulation, but Dragunov found his form as he eluded Dunne’s attacks to get in some offense of his own. A crisp rolling knee from the top rope rocked Dunne, but Dragunov’s second ascension wasn’t as successful because “The Bruiserweight” slugged him in mid-air.
The match continued over the course of a commercial break, with Dunne maintaining control. Still, Dragunov brought his innovative offense to Dunne and the finish came when an unexpected appearance from WALTER distracted Dragunov. The two competitors went back and forth a bit more before Dunne nailed his Bitter End finish to secure the victory The show closed with Dragunov getting one last look at the NXT UK Title before TakeOver 36.
