Josh Alexander has a significant match this weekend at IMPACT Wrestling Slammiversary as he will defend his X-Division Championship against five other opponents in an Ultimate X match.
Ahead of his title defense, Josh Alexander was a guest on the It’s My House Podcast to discuss all things IMPACT Wrestling. When the subject of the Ultimate X match was brought up, Alexander revealed he lobbied to make the match happen:
“In the sense of the match booking, I have the most to lose of everybody in it, but I also have what I think is the most to gain in terms of the thing I set out for since I won the X Division championship at Rebellion,” Alexander said. “I said I wanted to put the X Division back on the map I wanted to create a legacy that was like what Samoa Joe did for me early on in my career when I was watching him as a fan. I wanted to do that for other people watching now, and I think that I’ve had a very good stretch right now that – Ironman match was a historic thing.
“Now I can go into an Ultimate X match, which since I’ve been signed in IMPACT Wrestling, I have told management every single chance I could — if they were to book an Ultimate X match I don’t care, I need to be in it. I’m a huge TNA Impact fan from the early years and that match is an IMPACT exclusive, and if I’m going to do it, I got to do it here,” he said. “I don’t see a better way to defend that championship and if I successfully do it I put myself on the map as one of the best X Division champions of all time.”
One of the biggest things in professional wrestling this year is the “Forbidden Door” established by All Elite Wrestling owner Tony Khan which has seen several wrestling promotions work together this year. When asked if he would like to step through that door to face AEW TNT Champion Miro, he stated the man he wants to wrestle the most in AEW is PAC:
“I’ve seen that one [Miro] suggested a few times overall, but I get asked this question a lot, and my answer has universally been against PAC,” Alexander said. “For the last little while, I just think he’s one of the most well-rounded best wrestlers on planet Earth, and I think people seem to overlook that from time to time, and I would certainly like to test myself against PAC.”
Josh Alexander has also worked some NJPW Strong tapings this year. When asked about that, he believes his style translates to the New Japan style very well and that he’s wanted to wrestle in Japan his entire career:
“I think my style translates very well to what the Japanese fans are used to in the sense of like my pro wrestling is very, very sound,” Alexander said. “That’s what I pride myself on, and I can say that without embellishing at all – but it was certainly nerve-racking, in the sense that I’ve wanted to wrestle in Japan my entire career. I’ve been wrestling for nearly 16 years. That’s a very long time. I have countless friends that have achieved that goal far, far sooner than I have. I have been told by everybody that I’ve ever wrestled that came out of Japan from Mara Fuji all the way down, that it is insane and ridiculous that I have not wrestled there yet, so it just eats away at me, so I just wanted to make the best of that opportunity and hope that you know the right people saw me and hopefully it translates into me making that bucket list thing come true.”
