Ruby Riott To Younger Women’s Wrestlers: Don’t Change Who You Are, You’ll Find Your Place In This Business

Ruby Riott plans to use her wealth of experience to better the business as best she can.

The former WWE SmackDown star recently appeared on the “Wrestling Perspective Podcast” and discussed how she believes women’s wrestling can be improved in several areas. She described how she believes that women’s wrestlers often sexualize themselves because they think it will help them get booked, and she shared her hope that, going forward, women will remain true to themselves.

“As far as changing anything, I feel like on the indies, at least as of recent, I think it just kind of depends on how the female wants to represent herself,” said Riott. “Sometimes I think the girls think they have to be a certain way, and if there was any way that I could impact that to any younger generation, I feel like it would be to just stress that it’s not necessary. If that’s what she wants to be, then yeah, do your thing. But for me, I hope that a lot of the women can see it and know that it’s not necessary.

“You don’t have to sexualize yourself, it doesn’t have to be that way in order to get booked, and that’s one thing that I’ve never changed really about myself. One, because it’s uncomfortable if I tried, like I’m not organically like sexy, it’s weird and awkward.  I’m just an awkward human and it just wouldn’t come across as organic in anyway whatsoever.”

Riott emphasized that she wants to help women’s wrestlers see that they don’t have to change to be popular or successful; instead, they can find where they’re truly meant to be in wrestling.

“If there was any message that I could try and send out it would just be that it’s not necessary to just change based off of what you think that people want from you. Eventually you’ll find your place in this and you’ll find somewhere that adheres the best to the version of yourself that you’d like to portray. So, if I could change anything within the industry, it would be to just reinforce that message.”

Ruby also discussed a myriad of topics, including her return to the independent scene, her time with WWE, and her favorite independent wrestling promotions as a viewer.
