AEW’s women’s division has reportedly lost two of the competitors who were featured early in the company’s history.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, the contracts for Awesome Kong and Shanna have expired, and AEW opted not to renew them.
Kong hasn’t wrestled for the company since the Janaury 7, 2020 episode of AEW Dark. Before that, she had a prominent spot as a member of Brandi Rhodes’ Nightmare Collective. Fightful Select reports that though she had also served as a coach, she had reportedly been absent for a few months because she wasn’t cleared to wrestle. Kong debuted at the inaugural Double or Nothing event in 2019, and due to her impressive background, she was a buzzworthy addition for the new company at the time.
On the other hand, Shanna had also been absent throughout the initial stretch of the COVID-19 pandemic. But she returned to AEW in November and frequently competed on AEW Dark for a few months. She wrestled as recently as April 12 on the program.
WrestleZone will provide more details as they become available.
