It looks like Azteca Underground is about to make a bigger splash than anyone might have originally anticipated.
Court Bauer and MLW World Heavyweight Champion Jacob Fatu were guests on this week’s episode of Sean Waltman’s Pro Wrestling 4 Life, and the subject of Major League Wrestling’s various broadcast partners was brought up. When asked by Waltman about making their show distinctly different across their various platforms, Bauer said something that strongly implied Azteca Underground is not just a faction that will be featured on MLW Fusion, but rather a separate show.
“It’s going to be interesting. With the new project, Azteca Underground, it’s a pretty fun project,” Bauer said, “but it’s also going to be easier for us to make something feel distinctly different from Fusion.”
When asked to confirm by co-host Nick Hausman if the intent is to launch a second MLW series that is Azteca Underground instead of solely having it exist within the Fusion universe, Bauer said:
“All I can say is that we may or may not have received two bids for a second series that may or may not involve Azteca Underground.”
Lucha Underground villain Dario Cueto made his debut on last week’s season finale of MLW Fusion, and it was reported that the storyline would continue at the next set of MLW tapings in Philadelphia in July. Luis Fernandez-Gil, who played Dario Cueto in Lucha Underground, signed a “long-term deal” with MLW to reprise the role.
Lucha Underground ran on El Rey from 2014-2018. The new Azteca Underground is intended to be a “spiritual successor” to the original series instead of a proper reboot.
