Edge pulls back the curtain on who the ‘Ultimate Opportunist’ was when the cameras were on.
Edge was the guest on the premiere episode of FOX Sports’ new podcast, Out of Character with Ryan Satin, and spoke about the various characters he’s portrayed throughout his WWE career. After initially speaking about the character he’s trying portray today, Edge went into detail about where the “Rated R Superstar” came from.
Comparing his sleazy persona to grimy rocker, Edge said that era of his character was not very close to who he was, but he was very good at turning it on and off when it was time for television. He went on to explain that now he’s presented with a new challenge because he’s portraying someone more like his true self instead of a larger than life character.
“Very little. I would—that’s when I would try and pull from these larger than life, and I always said ‘Rated-R Superstar’ Edge was kind of like an ‘Appetite For Destruction’ era Guns N Roses, or ‘Too Fast For Love’ era Motley Crue,” he explained, “like this sleazy, slimy, pretty horrible person that you could picture crawling under the gutter to try and steal your girlfriend. He was that guy, and that, I always said, when I walked through the curtain, that’s when I became ‘Edge’. And as soon as I walked back through that curtain, I’m going to grab a coffee and I’m right back to being Adam.”
“Now, that has changed, which has been really interesting to play less of a character and play more of me. In a way, it’s kinda scary because now it’s more of me out there, warts and all,” Edge said, “but it’s fun, it really is, with this phase with the character.”
