Everyone may not be “out to get” Sami Zayn like his current WWE persona may perceive, but nearly everyone would agree that he’s doing some of his best work right now – Zayn included.
Sami spoke with Ryan Satin ahead of WWE Elimination Chamber this Sunday and the former Intercontinental Champion talked about the development of that aforementioned paranoid persona buzzing around WWE Friday Night SmackDown.
“I kind of agree, I think I am doing some the best stuff I’ve ever done,” Sami said. “Definitely in terms of mic work and stuff like that. I feel like this is definitely at my best right now and in that time where I was off because of the beginning of the pandemic and not really having any certainty of what was coming next, I was off for a couple of months.”
Sami adds that while he doesn’t completely disengage from the squared circle when he’s not wrestling in it, he does get mighty close.
“When I’m away from wrestling, I’m pretty ‘away’ from wrestling. I tend to compartmentalize it. When I’m in it, I’m in it 100% and when I’m out, I don’t want to say I’m out 100%, but pretty close.”
That time away may have helped Zayn add some extra layers to the moppy-headed freedom fighter we’re currently accustomed to on FOX.
“Things have just kind of spiraled organically into this – I’d say evolution, but it’s almost like ‘de-evolution’ to just I’m coming undone and I’m looking shaggy and frantic and narcissistic conspiracy theorist that’s deranged and thinks everyone is out to get him.”
