Roman Reigns Wins WWE Universal Championship At WWE Payback

At WWE Payback, “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt was scheduled to defend the WWE Universal Championship. Wyatt defeated Braun Strowman at WWE SummerSlam, and Roman Reigns attacked both men after the match. A triple threat match between the three was announced but Reigns didn’t sign the contract before the show started. Throughout the night, Paul Heyman remained vague as to whether Reigns has signed it during the show.

Strowman attacked The Fiend during his entrance and took control of the match. Wyatt trucked into Strowman with a crossbody. The champion slammed Strowman through the broadcast table. The camera panned to Alexa Bliss watching the match backstage. Wyatt got a giant mallet, but Strowman threw a broadcast chair at him. With a second attempt, Wyatt hit Strowman with the mallet. The Fiend hit the neck snap on Strowman. Wyatt snapped Strowman’s neck again. The fight spilled up the ramp to the entrance stage. Strowman trucked The Fiend off the stage and both men crashed through a table.

Strowman climbed to the top rope, but Wyatt superplexed him and the ring imploded. Reigns immediately came to the ring with Heyman at his side. Reigns signed the contract on his way to the ring. Reigns tried to pin Wyatt and Strowman, but they kicked out. Reigns brutally hit Strowman with a steel chair several times, but Strowman still kicked out. Wyatt locked Reigns in the Mandible Claw, but Reigns kicked him below the belt.

Reigns Speared Strowman to win the WWE Universal Championship. The Big Dog recaptured the title he never lost; he had to relinquish it when he took a leave of absence due to his battle with cancer.
