To kick off WWE SummerSlam, Asuka challenged Bayley for the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship. Asuka earned the opportunity by winning a battle royal on WWE Friday Night SmackDown. Bayley lost a Beat The Clock Challenge on WWE SmackDown, which forced her to face Asuka before Sasha Banks defended the RAW Women’s Championship against the Empress of Tomorrow.

Asuka gained the upper hand early on and dominated the first few minutes. The challenger floored Bayley with a DDT onto the floor. Bayley kicked Asuka’s knee and snapped her neck on the rope to take control. The champion grounded Asuka and dropped her with a Bayley-to-Belly for a two count. Asuka nearly stole the win with a roll-up, and she rocked Bayley with a kick to the head. Asuka rallied and hit a running hip attack for a two count. But a nasty knee-breaker on the apron gave Bayley control of the match again.

The champion targeted Asuka’s vulnerable leg, but a Codebreaker earned Asuka a two count. Bayley caught Asuka in mid-air and locked in a knee-bar, but Asuka reached the ropes to escape. Asuka caught a diving Bayley and locked in an arm-bar. Banks helped Bayley escape the hold, but Asuka floored the Boss with a hip attack when Bayley moved out of the way. Bayley immediately rolled Asuka up to win the match. Banks and Bayley attacked Asuka after the match.
