Cain Velasquez is going after one of the passions that he has but doesn’t include him stepping into the Octagon to fight another person. Instead, he’ll be getting into the squared circle to wrestle.
The former UFC Heavyweight Champion recently spoke with ESPN ahead of his pro wrestling debut where he’ll be teaming up with Cody Rhodes and Psycho Clown in a six-man tag team match against Texano Jr., Taurus, and a mystery partner at TripleMania XXVII.
In this interview, Velasquez made it known that he sees this transition as a parallel career with MMA because he can see himself doing this for the long haul and after his pro-MMA career is done.
“This could be the future for me,” Velasquez said. “Anything I can do, I try to be the best at it. I’m very competitive in that way. I’ll bust my ass to get every move down and also to sell every move. … I want to be a black belt in lucha, if they gave out belts. That’s my goal — to be the best luchador that I can be.”
“I’m gonna do more [pro wrestling],” Velasquez said. “I just want to keep getting better at it. I feel like I have so much potential with this. Now that I’ve been doing it and I know how much I can learn and how better everything can be, yeah man, it’s fun. F— yeah, I want to keep doing it.”
His match at the TripleMania XXVII event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 3rd, 2019, at Arena Ciudad in Mexico City. This interview also featured quotes from UFC Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier about Cain’s new venture.
