Stacey Ervin Jr. recently spoke to NBC Sports about his wrestling career and what made the superstar leave it behind. During the discussion, he also touched on his abrupt departure from the WWE, what he thought about John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight segment on the company, and his future goals.
Ervin had a pretty fast rise from signing with the WWE to making his way into the ring, but a freak landing during his first and only match left the young superstar walking away from the company. During his debut match, an NXT tag team bout with Humberto Carrillo against the Street Profits, Ervin was the recipient of a belly-to-back suplex gone wrong, with the new wrestler taking a nasty hit on his head. Ervin revealed that while the moment was nothing but a “scary spill,” it was still enough to serve as the reason for him walking away from the WWE.
“I don’t walk away from the company with any negative feeling,” Ervin said. “Everyone that’s with me has been very supportive and looking out for my best interests.”
According to him, Ervin, said that right before he made the decision to walk away from the company, he tuned into the now infamous Last Week Tonight segment on the WWE. “When I watched that, I wasn’t blown away,” Ervin said. “This is exactly what I’m going through.”
Ervin is set to officially part ways with the WWE this week, but will remain a fan of the company despite his own experience. “Even more so now because I’m seeing friends and people that I know who are super passionate about it,” he said. “I still have my wrestling trunks and my attire. I’ll probably be hanging onto that.”
Thankfully for Ervin, his experience in wrestling translates well to the world of health and fitness, the world that he now aims to tackle. Ervin recently launched a website and a workout guide last month, and says that the passion in which he had for the WWE can now be focused fully on helping others.
