On the most recent episode of Something to Wrestle, Bruce Prichard reminisced about No Way Out 2004. The legendary pay-per-view event saw Brock Lesnar get defeated by Eddie Guerrero, who won the WWE Championship by doing so. Prichard discussed the emotional scene afterwards.
Check out highlights below:
What it was like watching it take place backstage:
I cried. Watching the match again all these years later, I’m watching it like its the first time all over again. I’m just being riveted. Brock can work with pretty much anybody, but you put him with a smaller guy and he shines. I forgot how good he was then. Yes, a lot of it was Eddie but watching how Brock sold and the logic he used. … Everything they did in the match was believable. You couldn’t poke holes in any of it. … Eddie made Brock and made the championship mean something when he won it because he beat somebody.
On using Goldberg in the finish:
I knew we had to use it, but I hated using Goldberg in the finish. Hated it! It was a necessity, we had to use it to get to WrestleMania.
On the crowd reaction:
That place exploded. They wanted that so bad and I think that a lot of people were waiting for this not to happen. So, when it came to reality and their guy just defeated [Lesnar], a classic David vs. Goliath, you just felt it. He immediately went into the audience, went to his mother. We were crying backstage. It was one of those special moments where you have an idea and it’s executed better than I even imagined. A very proud moment for me and a proud moment for the business. We had three weeks to get to the story of that match and people are still talking about it.
After Eddie walks through the curtains:
It was a standing ovation. There were hugs and tears all around. Vince was crying. He was very emotional because it was magical. Everyone believed there was a happy ending. Brock came back and it was one of the best matches he ever had in his life, he was so thankful. Every once in a while a good guy wins, and that’s what happened in this night.
