The New Year’s episode of SmackDown Live provided viewers with a moment worthy of remembering, as Becky Lynch stood face-to-face with WWE’s flagbearer, John Cena.
The two would team up to defeat Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas and Zelina Vega in a mixed tag match, but beforehand Lynch made comments asserting herself to be Cena’s next successor. In a WWE exclusive interview with Mike Rome, Cena gave candid thoughts about “The Man” and her passion for the business (Transcription by Christopher McManus of WrestleZone):
“I remember speaking to a journalist when I was promoting the movie ‘Bumblebee’ and he asked me how do I feel about Becky Lynch’s character. She believes it, she is ‘The Man’, especially after being with her tonight. It is not a character, it is Becky Lynch. And that’s something I can relate to. When I stand tall in WWE ring, people know they’re getting the best of me. And Becky Lynch came out there and not only staked her claim but said, ‘Listen, if I have to go through you to get it, I’ll get it done,’ I look into her eyes and she meant it…I hope the other WWE superstars regardless of gender were paying attention to the attitude of Becky Lynch because sometimes you gotta announce your presence with authority.”
For words like this coming from the man who has carried WWE on his back for the better decade and a half, it is a massive compliment towards one of WWE’s hottest stars going today in Becky Lynch.
