Earlier this year in June, Hiromu Takahashi’s professional wrestling career was forever altered. He wound up breaking his neck in a match against Dragon Lee at the G1 Special event in San Francisco. This led to the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion vacating his belt.
Since relinquishing the belt, New Japan Pro-Wrestling has been quiet on Takahashi’s injury and recovery. The latest word comes from this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter (Subscription Required), and it’s not particularly good news. The “updated word” is that NJPW isn’t sure whether or not Takahashi will be able to return to the ring at all. There’s currently no return schedule set, and it’s looking as if it might wind up being a career ending injury.
It’s certainly a sad blow, as Takahashi quickly became one of New Japan’s fastest rising stars while in their Los Ingobernables de Japon faction.
