Dolph Ziggler was unsuccessful in capturing the WWE title in the summer of 2016, so he shifted his focus to the Intercontinental title. After failing once thanks to Maryse, he decided to put everything on the line for another shot at the title. By everything, we mean his entire career. It was all up for grabs for that one title. The stipulation alone elevated the Intercontinental Championship to a whole new level.
The WWE title match opened the PPV as WWE didn’t want it to clash with the Presidential debate, so it was unfortunate that the Ziggler-Miz match didn’t main event the show. What they did have, however, was a match to remember for years to come. Ziggler being the ultimate babyface defied the odds and overcame interferences from Maryse and The Spirit Squad to capture the Intercontinental Championship. The pop he got after his win can give you goosebumps in a minute.
