#2.) John Cena vs AJ Styles – Royal Rumble 2017
If in early 2016 you would tell any wrestling fan that AJ Styles would be one of John Cena’s greatest opponents, they would probably call you crazy. AJ Styles came into WWE and in his first year exceeded all expectations, becoming WWE Champion in just nine months of his run.
WWE’s trust in AJ Styles is very evident, which is likely why he feuded with John Cena just six months into his run. A successful heel turn saw AJ Styles defeat John Cena in Money In The Bank 2016 and even SummerSlam 2016, the latter of which was a clean victory. Not only this, but you could easily argue that both of those matches could have a place on this list, but in terms of the story told, both fall just behind their instant classic at the Royal Rumble in 2017.
With the WWE Championship on the line, Cena finally got one over on Styles, becoming a 16-time World Champion in the process. In front of a crowd of 40,000+ people at the Alamodome, the two put on a match so thrilling that the crowd were on their feet cheering for Cena by the end. The crazy part of this match? Neither competitor went outside the ring even once!
