The Monday Night Wars was an extremely important period of time for pro wrestling. Up until WCW began Nitro, WWF, were the undisputed kings of the wrestling world. Vince McMahon had already seen through most of his plan to end the territory system and make his company the sports entertainment juggernaut.
WCW did everything they possibly could to compete with WWE and for 82 weeks, they did exactly that – beating them in the ratings week after week after week. While they were still competitors up until the early 2000s, the company pulled no punches when it came to letting WWF know that they were the better brand.
It was a win-win situation for wrestling fans because they got to witness two different products going head to head and different superstars getting different opportunities. There may never come a time when wrestling is as popular again, but it’s a significant period in wrestling history, primarily because it saw many top WWF stars jumping ship and it eventually led to the Attitude Era beginning.
