AEW Star Harley Cameron Says Mercedes Moné Has Been Imperative To Her Career

Harley Cameron is looking to test herself against Mercedes Moné once again.

Cameron spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard ahead of AEW Worlds End. There, she and Willow Nightingale will defend the AEW Women’s Tag Team Championship against Mercedes Moné and Athena. The “Babes of Wrath” initially knocked Moné and Athena out of the title tournament, and find themselves making their first title defense against the same duo.

Despite being her opponent at Worlds End, Harley Cameron has worked with Moné to create some of AEW’s best moments of the year. Cameron said Moné hasn’t really given her verbal advice, but she’s been a great source of inspiration by leading by example.

“She has allowed me this year to dig deep and push to a different level. Obviously, she’s one of the greatest to ever do it, and having the opportunity to work with her has been imperative to my career,” Cameron explained. “It’s definitely highlighted me and given me opportunities, which is exactly what someone with that kind of star power can do.

“Being in the ring with her multiple times has pushed me to think outside the box and challenge myself. So I’d say it’s more inspiration than advice, per se. I’m obviously very excited to face her again at the pay-per-view, Worlds End. I’m hoping it will once again bring out that deep-level performance from me.”

Harley Cameron believes Mercedes Moné and Athena share a lot of similarities

Harley Cameron and Willow Nightingale also have to contend with Athena, who has been on a dominant run as a singles competitor. The “Forever Champ” has held the Ring Of Honor Women’s World Championship for more than 1,100 days, a staggering number by today’s pro wrestling standards.

Cameron said that Moné and Athena seem to argue a lot, but they still make a formidable team if and when they can get on the same page.

“It’s funny because I think a lot of what I just said regarding Mercedes also applies to Athena. I’d categorize her in a very similar way,” Harley Cameron explained. “She’s exceptional in the ring, definitely someone who challenges me and makes me dig deep. That, in a big way, explains why they’re teaming up.

“Even though they seem to bicker a lot — I don’t know if they genuinely like each other,” she continued. “If they can get on the same page, they’re two very dominant women with a lot of accomplishments and respect to their names. So I’d categorize Athena in the same way. If we take it home, it’ll only put an even bigger smile on mine and Willow’s faces, knowing that we beat them not just once, but twice.”

AEW Worlds End is an exciting way to close out the year

Cameron noted that so much is going on in AEW leading into Worlds End. MJF recently returned, and his entry into the World Championship match at the pay-per-view certainly has her interest.

“MJF has come back and really shaken things up, so I’m very interested to see how that match is going to unfold,” she noted. “The Continental Classic is obviously another highlight, but with everything happening between MJF, Swerve, Joe, and Hangman, I think it’ll be really interesting to see how that all plays out. I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on that one.”

AEW Worlds End takes place at the Now Arena in the Chicago suburb of Hoffman Estates, Illinois on Saturday, December 27. Stay tuned for more from our interview with Harley Cameron.
