With WWE’s second biggest event on the horizon, there has been a lot of talk surrounding the list of potential contenders for the WWE Universal Championship. But just who will be facing Brock Lesnar for the gold at SummerSlam?
Despite the initial rumor suggesting that Braun Strowman would be taking on the Beast at the “Biggest Party of the Summer”, recent RAW installments suggested that it would be either Roman Reigns or Samoa Joe instead.
After Reigns attacked Strowman at Great Balls Of Fire, he resumed his mini-rivalry with Joe and the two fought in last week’s Number 1 contender’s match in the main event. However, a returning Strowman would lay waste to both men. And it suddenly looked like the Monster Among Men was in the Universal Title picture. But is he in it alone?
After the build-up between Reigns and Joe, it wouldn’t make sense for WWE to just immediately drop it and shoehorn Strowman into the title picture instead. And that is really unfortunate because it means we may be denied the chance to see the epic showdown between two of WWE’s fiercest monsters.
Making It A Fatal 4-Way Would Spoil The Collision
WWE have been teasing Braun Strowman vs. Brock Lesnar for quite some time now. While the two briefly clashed at a previous Royal Rumble (as well as facing off in a few on-air confrontations) they have never actually faced each other one-on-one. It seems like it’s time for that to change.
Strowman has been built up as WWE’s most dominant superstar, while Lesnar is an unstoppable fighting machine. A match between the two of them would literally be the definition of an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. And there’s no better place to have a main event like that featured than SummerSlam.
Having effectively drawn it out to SummerSlam, WWE chose to go for a slow build – unlike the immediate gratification we see in almost all of today’s feuds. But for them to suddenly change it would completely undermine everything.
Don’t get me wrong, a Fatal 4-Way match with Joe and Reigns involved would undoubtedly be extremely entertaining. But their involvement would spoil the long-awaited collision between Strowman and Lesnar. Many of us have wanted to see the two face-off for a long time now, and adding two more superstars to the match would water down the clash as they would have to focus their time on old rivals instead of each other.
Moreover, having a shortened first encounter would spoil an eventual one-on-one collision between them as well. Having already seen the spectacle in a Fatal 4-Way environment, the novelty may have worn off by the time they would eventually meet one-on–one.
Strowman Deserves It
Since splitting from the Wyatt Family, Braun Strowman has been unstoppable. He has single-handedly dominated everyone he has come into contact with – including the Big Show and Roman Reigns. In today’s day and age, it’s unbelievable to think that he holds two victories over Reigns, but that should give you an idea of just how bright his future really is.
Before his injury, rumors suggested that he was supposed to wrestle Lesnar at Great Balls Of Fire before having a rematch at SummerSlam. While the Monster Among Men thankfully made it back to resume his plans, suddenly changing the main event to include two of Lesnar’s former conquests doesn’t seem very fair to the Monster Among Men.
The long-awaited match between Brock Lesnar and Braun Strowman would be a worthy WWE Universal Championship match, and a worthy SummerSlam main event. Changing it up to include Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe as well may make for a really exciting match, but it would be completely unfair to Strowman, who deserves a single shot at the WWE Universal Championship.
