Carmella (and Ellsworth) Win Money in the Bank
A historic moment took place to kick off WWE Money in the Bank. The women did battle in a solid contest, lasting over 13 minutes with the women really getting physical with the ladders. A beautiful dive from Charlotte, as we have seen before, gave us a nice highlight moment, while Becky and Natalya traded blows with the ladder. With all of the women utilizing the ladder to their advantage, James Ellsworth got involved and ended up climbing the ladder for Carmella. He dropped the briefcase to her and Carmella became the first ever Ms. Money in the Bank.
Twitter exploded, with everyone talking about a man grabbing the briefcase for the woman to win, and I laughed. I am echoing a lot of common opinions, but I look at it like this: James Ellsworth works for Carmella. There is such a unique gender reversal with him and Carmella, with him trying to do whatever it takes to let Carmella succeed. He is her manager and not the other way around. Also, nobody views James Ellsworth as a “man” half of the time because most of the Women’s division looks like they could take him in a fight. The change of gender reversals shows progression in the division. When was the last time you saw a male manager who does not wrestle and a female carry the load offensive for that duo? It never happens and I am absolutely alright with the outcome. Automatic heat on Carmella and Ellsworth, two of the best heels on Smackdown Live.
The only thing I wanted out of this match was a little more action. There could have been 2-3 more spots to make this match go from really good to great. History was made, but we all know the real storyline is how the person develops after they hold the suitcase.
The Uso’s vs. The New Day
Smackdown Live Tag Team Championship match at WWE Money in the Bank was another good, but not great moment. Both teams really brought out their fast offense, even though a few spots seemed sloppy. They have worked well together in the past and do the same tonight. Jey and Jimmy are such experts at Superkicks, while The New Day relied on a hot tag to Big E to get them going offensively. Big E hit multiple belly to belly suplexes and then would set up for his finisher. A kick out at two, and then the Midnight Hour seemed to end things for the brothers. It would not be so, as Jey and Jimmy escaped the ring and walked out. They would be counted out and retain the Smackdown Live Tag Team Championships.
Another match where it seemed as if fans were upset. I did not love the ending, but it makes sense. WWE views both of these teams at their “top 2.” The Uso’s should not drop the titles yet and The New Day does not deserve to lose clean on their first championship opportunity on the blue brand. I would rather see a disqualification and Jimmy and Jey attacking the faces. This would make them get more heat than walking out and feel/look like champions that feel they still have to prove they are the best. They have that gang mentality in the ring and on the mic. Let them roll with it, even after the bell rings.
