With the highly anticipated Brock Lesnar vs Mark Hunt bout taking place at UFC 200, speculation has been abound as to how the returning Lesnar will fare in his match against an opponent known for his advanced striking skills. Will Lesnar come out on top? Or will UFC 200 be a short lived memory for The Beast Incarnate? With those questions in mind, let’s take a look at some of the quickest matches in wrestling history!
King Kong Bundy vs. Special Delivery Jones
The first on the list is a match between the enormous King Kong Bundy and the overly relaxed Special Delivery Jones. The match is (in)famous for lasting only 9 seconds, though that is only a myth. The real match lasted for 24 seconds, which is still quite a short time. Bundy defeated Jones in just a couple of moves and, as soon as Bundy pinned him, Jones unable to withstand such great weight. There’s a rumor that the match was supposed to be much shorter, but that Jones intentionally prolonged it, wanting to get a better pay.
Next up is the fan-favorite Hulk Hogan, who defeated Yokozuna at Wrestlemania IX. This 22-second match was preceded by a true wrestling drama. After helping the injured Bret Hart from the ring, Hulk Hogan was challenged by Mr Fuji, Yokozuna’s manager, to fight for the title. After some hesitation, he agreed and was immediately grabbed by the huge Yokozuna. When Mr Fuji’s idea to throw salt into Hogan’s eyes misfired, Hulk took over the lead and finished the match in just 22 seconds. Quite a performance.
Rey Mysterio vs. John Bradshaw Layfield
JBL is known for not being the cleanest of fighters. This was best seen during Wrestlemania XXV, where he was supposed to face Rey Mysterio. Before the match even started, JBL kicked him a couple of times and put him out for a while. However, as soon as the referee hit the bell, Mysterio turned into the well-known wrestling machine and defeated Bradshaw in mere 20 seconds. Following that fight, JBL retired.
This match would have been a lot shorter if Daniel Bryan didn’t get too confident and asked for a small pause to kiss his girlfriend, AJ, before the match. As soon as he was finished, he met up with Sheamus’ leg and fell down. Sheamus pinned, hooking the leg and, and in a matter of seconds, the match was done. Officially, it is stated that the whole match lasted for 18 seconds, and what most fans at the time considered a highly disappointing bout, ended up launching the uber successful “Yes Movement” in WWE.
Kofi Kingston vs. The Brian Kendrick
Now here’s something that isn’t all that common. The cocky Kofi Kingston entered the ring with the title in his hand, showboating all the way. While one would expect that he might fall due to his excessive pride, he did something quite amazing. As soon as The Brian Kendrick, his opponent, finished arguing with the commentators, Kofi kicked him and pinned him, winning in 11 seconds! While some claim that Kofi wouldn’t have had a chance if TBK was really paying attention, we will never know.
Yet another entry for Sheamus on our list. This time he managed to win the match in astounding 10 seconds. As soon as the bell rang, Sheamus ran towards his opponent, Zack Ryder, and, with a powerful Brogue Kick to the body, knocked him down. After that, he casually strolled to Ryder and pinned him for the win. It was simply a walk in the park for this mighty Irishman that many opponents take lightly nowadays.
During the Wrestlemania XXIV, Kane showed us just what kind of a monster he can be towards his opponents. Chavo entered the ring like a true heel champion taunting the audience from time to time. When the referee finally revealed Kane, Chavo suddenly lost all of his courage. Realizing he’s in trouble, Chavo tried to take a swing at him, but the colossal Kane grabbed him by the throat and hit the chokeslam. In nine official seconds, the match was done.
Bob Backlund stood proudly before the ripped Diesel fighting for the WWE Championship title. However, a quick hit with the knee, grab, flip, throw and Bob was already on the ground, lying hurt on his back. For a second there, the ferocious Diesel seemed surprised by the ease with which he threw his opponent. Fortunately for him, in a matter of moments, he got himself together and ran towards Bob to pin him and end it all. The match lasted just eight seconds.
Dwayne Johnson is one of the most beloved wrestlers in WWE history. Even though many knew what he was capable of, no one expected him to beat Big Boss Man in just five seconds, setting the new record. The way Big Boss Man entered the ring hastily and with pure elegance of a true wrestler, many probably thought The Rock would be in trouble. However, ready to take on this challenge, Dwayne immediately wrestled him down and scored the pin fall victory. Boss Man tried to complain, but there was no point.
Chris Jericho and Jerry Lawler vs. Tazz and Naked Mideon
In the end, here is what people believe is the quickest win in the whole of wrestling history. It is actually a tag team match in which Chris Jericho and Jerry Lawler confronted Tazz and Naked Mideon. This record happened mainly because Tazz was completely frustrated by the fact that his surprise teammate was none other than the somewhat annoying nude grappler. During the whole confusion, Jerry “The King” Lawler tackled Tazz and won the match in just 3 seconds. Both Naked and The King ran away quickly and Tazz was left enraged and alone in the ring.
