The Wyatt Family and The New Day
The New Day come out dressed up as The Wyatt Family. They begin to mock them and then Xavier Woods tries to get them to stop it very mildly. Wyatt Family comes out and Bray cuts a promo about how Woods is scared and shaken by them. His facial expressions are on point, looking like he has seen a ghost. Wyatt Family says that The New Day will fall. When you look at this, this is fresh and different for The New Day. You needed them to expand and not do the same old gimmick from time to time. I like it, especially with Xavier who is, by far, the best personality and character that can pull this off. He seems like the little boy afraid to look under his bed when he thinks monsters are there.
I was really involved and interested in this segment. Will The Wyatt Family be the ones that dethrone The New Day? I think you have a six man tag team match at Battleground, followed by The New Day finally dropping the titles. It’s overdue that The Wyatt Family have not been champions in any way yet.
Main Event
Styles keeps Ambrose grounded by hitting a dropkick and then locking in a head lock. AJ fights off a few clotheslines and left hands and then Dean tries to get a backslide for a two count. A few more reversals, the Phenomenal Forearm and Dirty Deeds, while Ambrose sells an injury. AJ locks him in the Calf Crusher as Ambrose crawls for the rope.
The hold is broken as Ambrose makes it to the bottom rope. Styles hits a Pele Kick, but Dean bounces off the ropes with a clothesline. Out comes Gallows and Anderson come down to the ring, allowing AJ Styles to hit the Brainbuster. John Cena comes down, distracting Styles and he gets hit with the Dirty Deeds. The Triple Threat Match remains at WWE Battleground.
To end the night, the heels attack the faces. Cena gets the finisher from Gallows and Anderson on the ramp while Seth Rollins hits two Pedigrees on the champion.
I am always a fan of putting two separate storylines together and WWE capitalized on a Roman Reigns suspension to have us forget him. The two matches tonight were really good and really told a story of struggle and overcoming the odds. Distractions as simple as tonight are ways to show the fans that Styles is in Cena’s head and vice versa. I would not have added these guys and most fans knew that, but it still gave us two really meaningful and creative contests. It really carried the night, having an idea but still unsure of how it was going to play out. Great stuff from the main event talents on RAW tonight.
