A British Point of View: The Era of Squash

No I haven’t disappeared! I must start another column with another apology. As some of you may be aware, recently I lost a friend and the bad luck continues. My family suffered two very quick losses with my Grandma and an Auntie so you could say that times have been better. During this time my love for Professional Wrestling has remained but I haven’t really been able to give enough time to write much about it. It may only be a small thing but yet again I am dedicating this article to a lost loved one, my Grandma. She was the toughest person I have ever known and she fought off everything you could imagine and lived a great life until last week when she passed away at the age of 96. RIP Grandma you’ll never be forgotten!

One thing that I noticed after many hours of catching up with wrestling, the amount of squash matches we have to endure each week. Ryback slaughtering two men that even I think I could take on is a certainty. Damien Sandow is either destroying his opponents or simply refusing to face them. Antonio Cesaro is ruggedly destroying people on SmackDown and Sin Cara has faced Hunico more times than I care.

Now don’t get me wrong, just like Tony, I love a good squash match but I can’t help but feel that WWE if just treading water with the recent Over The Limit and No Way Out PPVs until the real PPVs of Money in the Bank and SummerSlam get going shortly.

WWE could do so much more with its talent. I know I’m going to watch new guys come in and start to destroy everyone they face but surely there could be some other ways of making this feel different? Couldn’t we get some behind the scenes stuff on them too? What about Ryback? Couldn’t we get an insider look to the machine? Show him training, have an interview with him backstage, something different that builds him up in a different way other than destroying someone we don’t know.

Damien Sandow could be shown doing MENSA tests and making people look stupid, we know he is a vicious character when provoked so why not try to explain some of his back story to show why he snaps so easily?

I’m not saying that they should stop them from destroying people in the ring or that they should start losing to the main roster straight away but I think a little variety would help in developing these characters further. One SmackDown the other week consisted of an opening promo, 4 squash matches and an average main event. Now again, it’s not bad quality but it is repetitive.

People are currently calling WWE for the lack of talent on the roster but I have to say that I disagree. I think that the US title and Intercontinental Championship should be unified along with the world and WWE title. Then you would have a massive talent pool for your main event scene and the mid-card. Let’s break it down.

With One World title ideally the WWE Championship you could have the following guys going for it in your main event scene:

CM Punk, Sheamus, Alberto Del Rio, Big Show, Kane, Chris Jericho, Daniel Bryan, John Cena, Mark Henry, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, Triple H, Brock Lesnar, Undertaker and Wade Barrett.

For the Intercontinental Championship you can focus your mid-card with the following:

Christian, Kofi Kingston, R-Truth, Alex Riley, Antonio Cesaro, Brodus Clay, Cody Rhodes, Curt Hawkins, Damien Sandow, David Otunga, Drew McIntyre, Hunico, Jack Swagger, Dolph Ziggler, Justin Gabriel, Michael McGillicutty, Ryback, Sin Cara, Ted Dibiase, Tyker Reks, The Miz, Tyson Kidd, Zack Ryder.

That obviously not everyone, many people will argue the placing of The Miz and Dolph Ziggler but these guys can be moved around as you please. The women’s and tag team divisions would obviously need looking at too but with the inclusion of new talent from the new NXT then I don’t really see how everyone keeps thinking that WWE’s roster is looking thin. There is a lot of talent which can be used there but unifying all the belts seemingly is the only option left in my opinion. The World Heavyweight Championship feels nothing more than a glorified mid card title these days and the position on the card of both world titles means that credibility is being lost on those championships. I thought Cena being out of the title picture would help the belts but unfortunately it has had the opposite effect when the World Title kicks off a PPV whilst Cena has a no meaning match in the main event.

All is not lost, exciting times are sure to be coming and on our last episode of Virtually Reality I discussed an idea that could have gone down a few weeks back at Slammiversary which would have given you your one big angle for the summer. Sadly this didn’t take place but if you can spare less than 40 minutes to hear an idea that I think everyone would have given time too then it would be greatly appreciated.

Virtually Reality should be making it’s comeback this upcoming weekend as long as I don’t get any more bad news (which is now unlikely as England already went out of Euro 2012 on penalties, but don’t try to make me anymore upset!)

Do you think that more direction is needed with the current roster? Do you think we need more than squash matches to make a character?
