WrestleZone’s Top Ten: WWE Vengeance Matches

Number 1: Chris Jericho becomes the First Undisputed WWE Championship: San Diego, California, 2001

No other man can say they beat two of the best ever in the same night, let alone back to back. Chris Jericho was the wild card, the underdog in the Unification WWE/World Championship one night tournament. Jericho would put on a great match with The Rock to claim the title, as McMahon would interfere as well. Just under 20 minutes, the Rock would get hit with a low blow, and Jericho would hit Rock Bottom on the Great One. Jericho, battered and beaten, would have to immediately face Stone Cold Steve Austin. With a great bout back and forth with The Rock, everyone thought that Austin would easily win this match. He was the odds on favorite, second was The Rock, and third was Kurt Angle. It was Jericho, a WCW superstar brought over to the WWE to "save us." Name a catchphrase of Jericho, and you got what he was. The best in the world at what he does is my favorite, and years before it showed. He lasted another 13 minutes with Austin. Controversy, as McMahon tried to help Jericho, Ric Flair came to fend off Vince. We then see Booker T come out and aide Jericho, as he would win the first ever Undisputed WWE Championship. A moment that lives in infamy, one that Jericho can always take to the bank with him, this windy December night in San Diego will always be remembered as the night Chris Jericho became a major player for years to come.
