While there is all this talk of the most established and recognized man in professional wrestling, I want to talk about another guy who nobody really knows but WWE seems to be trying to shove him down our throats.
Sheamus was given a powerful segment on RAW this past Monday when he had another match with Jamie Noble. He squashed him the week before but it was explained he wasn’t happy with his performance and wanted more of Noble.
So we get the MMA style ending of the referee stopping the fight due to Noble being unable to continue and Sheamus then amping up the aggression with a power bomb outside the ring.
During this whole bit the crowd seemed to be less than caring of who was in the ring. A small reaction could be heard when Noble hit the ground after the power bomb, but otherwise who cares.
Once again another guy is trying to be made into this unstoppable force but in the end will probably be remembered for about as much as the GTV segments were on WWE programming in the late 90’s. For those of you trying to figure out what that was or why you don’t remember ever hearing about it in WWE DVD’s, well, you are making my point on its impact in the pro wrestling history.
Kozlov, Chris Masters, Khali, Mike Knox, Snitsky, all names who were once being billed as the toughest guy on the block and showing no weakness. None of them got into the title hunt; well Khali technically did but it was short and thrown together at the last minute due to suspensions. None of them drawing any money or being heavily advertised.
Masters gets released and comes back and is used for gimmicks such as RAW’s got talent.
Khali goes from destroying the Undertaker to dancing around and kissing people.
Mike Knox isn’t relevant and Snitsky isn’t with the company anymore.
My point is the guys we just let go out there and perform are the ones that become successful. The people are going to decide your fate in the end. And, if nobody cares to believe your hype, it won’t matter no matter how many power bombs, master locks, chops, ugly stares, and bad teeth you have.
Even the way WCW did it with Goldberg was different. They came out of break with Goldberg in the ring with no introduction like they do with the jobbers and Hugh Morris came out. Goldberg won which going into he was the underdog cause nobody knew him and slowly ran away with a bandwagon of support.
When Sheamus or all of these other failed big strong talents don’t pan out, its because they come walking down the ramp and you know they are going to win without getting any offense from their opponent.
Kofi Kingston, John Cena, MVP, Carlito, John Morrison, all got pushes but let the crowd believe in them and got the emotion involved. They won some matches, cut some good promos, and then either won or lost depending on if they were heel or face . By now, they got the crowd behind them or really against them. They continued to win and loose in a rivalry to keep the crowd guessing and involved in what was going to happen to them.
