I wanted to talk about the current state of most wrestlers and their current weight issues. Now before I begin I am by no means doubting anyone’s abilities in the ring, no matter what their weight might be but it is something that seems to have advanced and been more noticeable recently.
Let’s look at some of the people I’m talking about. I mentioned Matt Hardy in my last column and this is something he has addressed with his injuries over the years. He claims he is now losing weight and I hope he gets to a level which he feels comfortable with, but what about Chris Jericho?
Chris has over the last two years been the veteran heel for all wrestlers and appears to be the true gentleman and class act wrestler in and out of the wrestling ring. However, he has recently started to develop a larger torso than usual. Now I am not calling him overweight, but he does look bigger than he used too.
Edge, this is a man who also doesn’t look as toned as he used to be but is by no means overweight.
Undertaker, this man used to carry quite a bit of weight while he was younger and has done incredible work conditioning himself as he as gained age, but I couldn’t help but feel that upon his return at Summerslam he looked like he had dropped off the training slightly. Maybe this is because he has had time off and the conditioning will return.
Kane, he is another example of when the old wrestling attire covered his body so physique was never as evident. However, over the last few years Kane has started to show more weight.
Triple H demonstrated a bigger size after 2005 and although it was not something that stopped him from doing anything physical, it did seem to be something that fans picked up upon.
Even Rey Mysterio has gained massive amounts of size since his older days in WCW and his early days in the WWE.
So what could be the reason?
Is it because all the above mentioned names are starting to slow down their careers and it’s a natural event?
These men have all been involved within the industry for many years and it would be a natural thing to lose the drive to continue to push your body as you gain age.
Is it something to do with enhancement drugs and possibly starting or stopping certain medications which has taken effect on their body?
We all know that drug abuse is a big issue within the world of pro wrestling and with new testing procedures then maybe people have had to stop taking certain things or even had to start new or different medications which have started to show a physical effect on the body.
What do you feel are the reasons for this? Do you even feel that certain wrestlers have gained weight? Do you think the High Definition era has brought more attention to imperfections?
Or maybe you feel that I’m being too critical or suffering from a state of blindness?
