WWE took the wrestling world by storm today when they announced that Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff would be returning to backstage roles, with Heyman becoming the executive director of RAW while Bischoff became the executive director of SmackDown Live. In a way, the roles have been reversed from the last time they both held backstage roles in WWE.
However, in Bischoff’s case, his backstage role was relatively limited as he was primarily an on-screen figure. Paul Heyman, however, was hands-on with SmackDown’s creative and it was this very period where fans began to acknowledge SmackDown as the better show of the two. When he was given reins over WWE’s edition of ECW, there was a clear difference in visions and it led to him departing the company until he returned for Brock Lesnar.
However, this represents a clear change in WWE – a change during a time of allegedly low morale and creative disarray. It was certainly a decision that nobody saw coming and here are a few reasons why it happened.
