Marty Scurll: The Next Big Thing In Pro Wrestling

5 reasons why Marty Scurll is the next big thing in pro wrestling

Marty Scurll has thrived over the last few years. It was undoubtedly creative freedom in the promotions that he performed at that allowed him to come to his own. He’s the kind of wrestler who simply would be held back if there were several creative restrictions on him. His run with New Japan Pro Wrestling has been particularly impressive, as he began to show a new side of him that hadn’t really been seen before.

It also gave him the opportunity to start competing with even higher-level competition than what he was used to. His run in the Junior Heavyweight division led him to becoming champion, where he even defended the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title in a Fatal-4-way match at Wrestle Kingdom (albeit, in an unsuccessful attempt).

There’s little doubt that there are big things in the future for The Villain Marty Scurll. Whether it’s a move up to NJPW’s Heavyweight division (which is very possible if he sticks around long enough) or even a move to WWE, he’s bound to succeed because he has the qualities of what it takes to be a top star.

WWE in particular is something that many people believe is in his future and it’s very likely as he’s still relatively young. It is a place he can excel at, despite not necessarily possessing the standard “look” of a WWE star. We explain the importance of Marty Scurll and why he’s one of the best all-round wrestlers in the world today.

#5.) A natural heel

Marty Scurll is a natural heel in every sense of the word. The British star is quite a versatile performer but as a heel, he’s able to bring out an absolutely sadistic side to himself and make fans hate him. If you do hate him, then that’s exactly what The Villain wants. It’s the subtle things, such as him cracking his opponent’s fingers and making fans cringe that really add to his persona.

In fact, the finger cracking was something he practiced from the time he began wrestling, but he only implemented it as an important part of his moveset over the last few years. If you want to see a perfect example of his heel work, watch his match against Will Ospreay at Sakura Genesis 2018.

#4.) A versatile character and performer

One of the best traits that Scurll has about him is the fact that he’s such a versatile performer. It’s true and fair to argue that he brings in comedic elements into his matches a bit too much, but what many seem to forget is the fact that Scurll can do both comedic and serious roles and do it with conviction.

It’s not every performer who has the ability to do this and his versitality as a character will be one of the defining traits of his career when it’s all said and done.

#3.) Elite level in-ring competitor

Apart from just versitality in character, Scurll also has versitality in his in-ring work. Whether it’s high-flying or groun-based, technical mat wrestling, Scurll can do both at a high level and pull it off as well. He’s faced the best of the best competitors on the planet and has proven that he can adapt to all kinds of styles thrown at him.

The fact that he’s an all-rounder is something that’s going to greatly benefit him in the long run. He’s simply exciting in every sense of the word.

#2.) Merchandise potential

Merchandise is a vital part of every wrestler’s portfolio, as it contributes to a large chunk of the money that they earn. Not only this, but merchandise is one of the main things that promotions look at when it comes to mareketability of stars. Scurll has two major things going for him: the bird mask and the umbrella.

It’s a uniqe thing that he has going for him and the fact that they look so cool very likely means that they’ll translate well in merchandise sales.

#1.) He hasn’t even reached his prime

Marty Scurll is just past 30 years old. Wrestling is a young man’s game and Scurll, being just 30 has an immense amount of upside to him. A WWE future seems quite clear because he’s at a good age where he can still spend a few more years outside the company before getting signed on.

More than anything, the fact that he’s so young means that he has enough time to improve further as a character and an in-ring performer, and improve he will.
