Ultra Violette On Wrestling Her Mentor Sumie Sakai: It Meant The World To Me

Ultra Violette reflects on her match against wrestling veteran Sumie Sakai.

Earlier this year, Ultra Violette had the opportunity to wrestle her mentor — something that not many performers get to do in their careers. While training under the likes of Amazing Red and Brian XL from House of Glory, Violette also spent a lot of her time honing her craft alongside wrestling legend Sumie Sakai, who formerly served as the inaugural ROH Women Of Honor World Champion.

Speaking with WrestleZone’s Ella Jay, Ultra Violette recalled her match against Sumie Sakai, which took place at Capital Championship Wrestling’s Victory event in February. This match, which was positioned in the show’s main event, saw Violette defeat Sakai in a hard-hitting affair.

“That match was such a full circle moment from our [previous] interview. I think that interview was the definition of manifestation. We had the interview and then the next thing you know, I see the flyer, I’m like, ‘No way.’ It caught me so off guard,” Violette said. “That match meant so much to me. It was definitely one of the matches where there’s so much pressure and you want to show everyone, show who’s in there with you what you’ve got, how much you’ve grown, have you been listening [to their instruction]. It was definitely a scary one, but it was so worth it. I loved it so much. I love her so much. It definitely meant the world to me. And for that to happen at CCW and then to become their Champion, it’s been such a good year and I’m so grateful.”

Lessons From A Legend

Ultra Violette was also asked to share some of the lessons she’s learned from Sakai, who carries forth over 25 years of wrestling experience.

“She knows everything. This is like the littlest thing, but even when I met her at the airport, I dropped her off at the airport one time and I met her there. She travels so much, because she’s like a veteran, she’ll tell you, she’ll map the building, ‘You’re going to go up the escalator, you’re going to make a right.’ I was lost, and she just knows where she is. She knows everything,” Violette said. “She’s taught me how to fix little things in the ring. She’s taught me psychology things, she’s taught me wrestling social cues, things to say and things to do in the back. Things you shouldn’t say and do, just everything. I feel like she’s influenced me.”
