WWE RAW has been formulaic for quite some time. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but one must introduce something new in order to keep it from coming stale. The cast of characters will rotate in and out but nearly every episode will begin with a 20 minute promo segment that will then set the tone of the show. It’s these type of things that can make episodes feel repetitive. However, one segment felt totally fresh during last night’s episode: Bray Wyatt’s Firefly Fun House.
Looking like a children’s show straight out of “PeeWee’s Playhouse” and “Blue’s Clues,” we got to see a totally different look for the former cult leader. Rather than looking disheveled, Wyatt was in friendly attire and wearing a smile. It was an entire new look for the character and one that people had mixed feelings towards. However, no matter how you felt about the rebranding, it absolutely had people talking because it was something fresh!
I’ve watched the segment a number of times since it aired and every moment had meaning to it. From the hints at a dual personality due to the gloves that read “HURT” and “HEAL” to the names of Wyatt’s talking toys Mercy and Abby. The former is most likely a reference to Waylon Mercy, the former WWF star that was based upon “Cape Fear.” Meanwhile, the latter is obviously a reference to Sister Abigail. It’s a small thing, but it’s these touches that reward longtime fans for watching the product. It also shows that this is still Bray Wyatt at the end of the day. Yes, he’s been gone for some times and has seemingly been rehabilitated, but the dark side is still lurking.
It’s not often that I’m excited to see where a RAW storyline goes, but I’m all in for this one. The Firefly Fun House looks intriguing and I’ll sure as hell will be watching the next segment with an open eye. So many segments can feel like a blur or a waste of time, but I’ll happily rewatch something as interesting and cryptic as we’re getting.
Wyatt is a great performer that has proved himself in and outside of the ring, so I can’t wait to see where this leads.
