Though Women’s History Month may be winding down, its spirit remains alive. For circus artist-turned-wrestler Leah Sparks, female inspiration comes from multiple avenues.
“My circus company is a three-female run company. Especially when we did Canada’s Got Talent, it was femininity and womanhood. That was what we were really standing our ground on. So all of my circus friends and strong women, they inspire me every day,” Sparks told WrestleZone’s Ella Jay. “My mom, my sisters, all that.”
Within the pro wrestling world, Sparks is empowered by a number of her fellow Canadian indie stars, including Kristara and former GPW Women’s Champion Dreya Mitchell. Kristara, a former ISW Women’s Champion, has made significant strides north of the border, so much so that she was named Quebec’s Women’s Wrestler of 2024
“Kris, people who follow her journey, she’s so talented,” Sparks said. “She works so hard. She’s in the spot she is because of who she is and how she works. She’s really talented. She doesn’t just sit on the talent, she keeps working to get better. But beyond that, she is someone who will always think of you, always consider you. I don’t know because I’m not in the rooms, but I’m sure she’s the kind of person that would bring your name up in a room you’re not around. She inspires me, honestly, so much. So I try to tell her lowkey in person, but anytime I get a chance on a public forum to do so.”
In the ring, Mitchell and Sparks have often found themselves on opposing sides. Behind-the-scenes, though, Sparks confirms that there’s nothing but love and respect.
“Dreya Mitchell, powerhouse, badass in the ring, but my God, she inspires me. She keeps me grounded. Great head on her shoulders. She deserves all of this and more. She’s going to get all of this and more. I just know it. We all know it.”
