Jack Perry became emotional while remembering his late father, Luke Perry, after his “bittersweet” title win at AEW Revolution.
Jack Perry competed in the 21-man Blackjack Battle Royal for the AEW National Championship during the AEW Revolution Zero Hour, which ended up extending into the PPV. He outlasted the others and eliminated former champion Ricochet to walk out of the event with the gold.
Speaking on the post-show media scrum, Jack Perry noted that the title win is bittersweet to him, since it happened at the Crypto.com Arena (FKA the Staples Center), where he used to walk around as a child with his late father, actor Luke Perry. Perry noted he’s happy he won the title in the building, but also feels sad because his father is no longer with him.
“As I said, today is kind of bittersweet. I don’t talk about it too much. My dad’s been dead, he died like seven years ago, now, and it’s not something that I think about in a big way every single day,” Jack Perry began. “Obviously, I think about it, but it’s been seven years, and thankfully, I’ve been able to have other stuff to put my mind towards.
“Today, coming here, being in this building, the only time I had ever been here was walking around with my dad, and at that point, I was so young. I was probably still holding his hand,” Jack Perry said. “It was interesting, and it was really cool for me to now be here in this way. But it was also sad because I was thinking the person whom I wish could be here the most isn’t here.
Jack Perry was grateful that he had his family and friends to share the moment with
“It’s tough, but it also makes me think about the people that I’m lucky enough to have here. My mom and my sister got to be there, which I was really grateful for, and to be here with my best friend (Luchasaurus), who almost died a year ago. He had his illness, and I’m sure he’ll get into all that at some point, but it just puts it all in perspective. Real life happens, and it happens in ways that you wouldn’t expect all the time,” Jack Perry said.
“To have this (the AEW National Championship) happen in this building for me, and without getting into too much detail, there have been a lot of highs, but there have been some really low lows that I never really anticipated having, because you don’t,” Jack Perry said. “There were times when I have wondered, ‘Did I give my life to the wrong thing? Am I not doing well enough? Did I make a mistake,’ because you only get one go around, maybe, I guess who knows? But I thought, ‘This is my life. Did I make the right choice with it? And I’ve questioned that at times, which hurts.
“So, to be here now and succeed in such an overwhelming way, with my family, with my friends, in a company that I’ve been a part of since day one, that just really reaffirmed to me that I made the right choice,” Jack Perry said. “Who knows how it all works? But I thought, ‘I hope that somewhere you can see this.'”
