A big change has been made to the planned direction for the Undisputed WWE Championship match at WrestleMania 42.
At WWE Elimination Chamber, Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton stood alone inside the Chamber. Just the two of them, then McIntyre rushed in and attacked Rhodes out of nowhere. Chaos followed as Orton and Rhodes managed to get rid of McIntyre.
But the damage was already done. Orton quickly capitalized, hitting Rhodes with an RKO for the win. And just like that, the road to WrestleMania started looking very different. After the show, Nick Aldis stepped in on the post-show.
He announced that McIntyre will defend his title against Cody Rhodes on WWE SmackDown. Earlier, reports suggested WWE wasn’t planning a singles title match at WrestleMania. It was reported that a five-pack or six-pack challenge could happen. But things don’t look that way anymore.
According to PWInsider Elite, WWE now plans to run Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton for the Undisputed title at WrestleMania 42. Orton earned the shot by winning the Chamber match. A surprise win, which many fans didn’t fully expect.
However, the expectation backstage is that Rhodes will defeat McIntyre on SmackDown and enter WrestleMania as champion, setting up Rhodes vs. Orton on the grand stage. A source reportedly said the decision was “not a shot at Drew McIntyre’s work.”
WWE is not unhappy with his performance. The company simply wants to present Rhodes vs. Orton this year. Many also felt that Orton winning the Chamber would be a “nice surprise” for the fans. As for McIntyre, his WrestleMania 42 possible opponents could include Jacob Fatu or Aldis.
