AEW Dynamite Results:
This week’s episode of Dynamite kicked off with a rundown of what’s to come this weekend at AEW WrestleDream. They go backstage to a Renee Paquette sit-down interview with Kris Statlander and Toni Storm.
Toni Storm says she doesn’t know who she is without that AEW Women’s World Championship, but she also doesn’t know who Kris Statlander is. Statlander says Storm can’t figure her out because she’s always evolving, and she’s already a different person than she faced at All Out. Statlander says she’ll give Storm the rest she deserves after WrestleDream.
Storm says at WrestleDream, they will find out the truth. Statlander says Storm knows the truth; she just has to accept it. The interview ends with Storm demanding that Statlander meet her in the ring, and they are coming out to the ring right now.
Storm and Statlander start brawling in the ring without a referee. Statlander and Storm, at different points, each put their hands behind their back and offered the other woman to hit them with the championship, but neither would. Things end with Storm kissing Statlander on the forehead before leaving the ring.
Jungle Jack Perry is backstage. Perry says he doesn’t hate the Young Bucks and he’ll always be grateful for everything they did for him, but he wasn’t there for him when he needed them and dodged his phone calls, so he had to get someone from his past that would be there for him. Luchasaurus appears and growls at the camera.
GOA (w/ Ricochet) vs. The Hurt Syndicate (w/ MVP)
- The finish of the match saw Ricochet get involved behind the referee’s back and lay out Shelton Benjamin. Bishop Kaun scored the pinfall victory for his team.
Winners: GOA
Grade: B+
This was a very good match to kick off the show. These two teams work incredibly well together, and GOA arguably got the biggest win of their career tonight. I still am hopeful a stipulation is added to their trios match at WrestleDream because going from a street fight last week to a regular match on the pay-per-view just seems odd to me.
Who will quit at AEW WrestleDream?
They show a clip from New York Comic Con where Darby Allin appeared during a panel to attack Jon Moxley.
We get a very interesting vingette between Jon Moxley and Darby Allin where they speak to each other behind a pane of glass like one of them is visiting the other in jail. Jon Moxley says he isn’t sure how this thing between them is going to end. Darby Allin admits there’s not a day that goes by that he hasn’t thought about joining the Death Riders, as he sees what they are trying to do.
But when push comes to shove, he doesn’t trust Moxley because of what he did to Bryan Danielson. Moxley says he did what he had to do. Allin says Moxley is trying to chip away at everything that makes AEW special, and at WrestleDream, he’s going to wrap the AEW flag he planted at Mount Everest around Moxley’s throat.
Moxley says Allin’s opponent at WrestleDream isn’t him; he’s fighting ghosts. Mox says he’s fought a lot of ghosts, and it’s never ended well. Moxley says the biggest difference between them going into WrestleDream is that this isn’t about him. PAC appears behind Allin and brutally attacks him while Moxley watches before leaving. Go out of your way to check this out.
Claudio Castagnoli vs. Roderick Strong
- The finish of the match saw Claudio Castagnoli hit Roderick Strong with a launching uppercut to score the pinfall victory.
Winner: Claudio Castagnoli
Grade: B
Solid match. A hard-hitting technical affair. But it wasn’t a match I was overly interested in. The match was good, but the winner was obvious, and I was just kinda watching along, waiting for the finish to happen.
The Don Callis Family has a lot of gold
We see a video of Don Callis celebrating his birthday with his family. This aired on social media earlier this week. They follow it up by airing highlights of Konosuke Takeshita defeating Zack Sabre Jr. for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
Kenny Omega and Jurassic Express vs. Josh Alexander, Hechicero, and Mark Davis (w/ Don Callis)
- The finish of the match saw Jurassic Express hit Hechicero with a modified Doomsday Device to score the pinfall victory for their team.
Winners: Jurassic Express and Kenny Omega
After the match, the Young Bucks attack Jurassic Express, but Omega stops them from hitting Jack Perry with the TK Driver. Jurassic Express lays out the Young Bucks and Don Callis Family as Omega contemplates things in the ring.
Grade: A-
Loved this! This was a very fun trios match. They told a really great story with Jack Perry and Kenny Omega and seemingly set up the next chapter of The Elite storyline between Omega and the Bucks. I’m very curious to see where this all goes after WrestleDream. Now just book Omega for a match on the pay-per-view already!
Skye Blue (w/ Julia Hart) vs. Jamie Hayter
- The finish of the match saw Jamie Hayter hit Skye Blue with Hayterade to score the pinfall victory.
Winner: Jamie Hayter
After the match, Thekla appears on the Tron and congratulates herself for making it. Thekla says the reason she attacked Hayter on her debut is that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Thekla says WrestleDream will be toxic to the core.
Grade: B
This was a good match. I’m genuinely impressed by how far Skye Blue has come from where she was when she started out in AEW. I used to not enjoy her in-ring work at all, but over the years, she has become a very solid performer. Props to her. Hayter and Thekla at WrestleDream should be a damn good matchup. Really looking forward to that one.
Ultimo Moné
Renee Paquette is backstage with Mercedes Moné. Mone says she’s not here to break records, she’s here to smash them. Moné announces that as of this Friday, she will become the longest reigning TBS Champion in history. Mercedes confirms she’ll be at WrestleDream, but as of this writing, she doesn’t have a match scheduled. I guess that could change soon? We shall see!
AEW World Champion Hangman Page makes his way to the ringside area to join the commentary team for the next matchup.
AEW World Trios Championship: The Opps (c) vs. LFI (w/ Sammy Guevara)
- The finish of the match saw Samoa Joe lock Dralistico in a Coquina Clutch to win the match via pass out.
Winners: And still AEW World Trios Champions, The Opps
After the match, LFI attacks The Opps from behind. RUSH spits at Hangman, and Page gets involved, clearing the ring. Samoa Joe picks up the AEW World Championship and shoves it into Hangman’s chest before leaving.
Grade: A-
This was a fun “main event” for Dynamite. It’s nice to see LFI get showcased more on Dynamite. I really enjoy The Opps as Trios Champs, and I can’t see them dropping the titles anytime soon. Also, while we’re changing the show over, I get why they are calling the third hour Collision, but it’s really just a three-hour Dynamite. Let’s be real here. I think Page and Joe are going to hear the house down this weekend at WrestleDream. Can’t wait to see it go down.
Wheeler Yuta and Daniel Garcia (w/ Marina Shafir) vs. Orange Cassidy and Kyle O’Reilly
- The finish of the match saw interference from all of the Death Riders, leading to Daniel Garcia scoring the pinfall victory on Kyle O’Reilly.
Winners: Wheeler Yuta and Daniel Garcia
After the match, Darby Allin shows up and attempts to confront Jon Moxley, but he’s still injured from the attack earlier in the day. He’s quickly laid out by both Castagnoli and PAC, but he still crawls to the ring until Yuta and Garcia join in to beat him down. Despite all of their attacks, Allin continues to crawl to the ring and ends up eating a boot to the side of his head from Shafir.
The Conglomeration brawl with the Death Riders as Allin finally gets into the ring. He lays out the AEW flag at Moxley’s feet and says it’s never too late to say I quit. Moxley lays him out with a Paradigm Shift on the flag before leaving.
Grade: B+
I really enjoyed this match, and a big reason for that is that I genuinely wasn’t sure which team was going to win. AEW isn’t big on giving Orange Cassidy a lot of losses, and Garcia has been consistently pushed since joining the Death Riders, so something had to give. I should have known it would result in Death Riders’ interference. Typical… Nevertheless, I still really enjoyed the matchup until the overbooked ending.
Top Gods have something to say
FTR, Megan Bayne, and Big Stoke make their way to the ring. Megan Bayne asks Willow Nightingale how it feels to know she gave it everything that she had, only to realize it still wasn’t good enough. Bayne says Nightingale coming for her again doesn’t make her tough; it makes her stupid. Bayne says she’s going to tear Harley Cameron apart tonight.
Big Stoke says he can’t articulate how much he hates Willow, but he can articulate how much he hates JetSpeed. Stoke says Kevin Knight has all the potential in the world, but he’s wasting it teaming up with Speedball. Stoke says FTR will finish things at Tailgate Brawl on Saturday and return to their pursuit of the AEW World Tag Team Titles.
Dax Harwood asks the crowd to use their brains as he puts over all of FTR’s accomplishments. The crowd tells Dax to shut the f*ck up, but Dax says they paid to see them. Harwood says this Saturday, they will stand across the ring from God. JetSpeed, Nightingale, and Cameron interrupt on the Tron.
Harley Cameron says that FTR stands for Fear the Rath. Nightingale informs Cameron there is a w in wrath. Cameron says she’ll just have to get the W tonight. During the video promo, the four of them attack from behind and lay out Bayne and FTR. The match between Bayne and Cameron happens next.
Megan Bayne vs. Harley Cameron
- The finish of the match saw Megan Bayne hit Harley Cameron with a running Liger Bomb to score the pinfall victory.
Winner: Megan Bayne
Grade: B
This was a fun match. I thought it was very smart to have Megan Bayne attacked before the match to explain why the match against Harley Cameron was so competitive. Bayne was always going to win, but they made her earn it. I enjoyed this match.
An open challenge has been made for Tailgate Brawl this Saturday night
Eddie Kingston and HOOK are backstage. Kingston says he’s done with LFI and wants to enter the tag team division with HOOK. Kingston says they will be at Tailgate Brawl this Saturday, looking for a fight. Sounds like an open challenge to me.
Anthony Bowens and Max Caster are backstage with Alicia Atout. They both say that they will not be tagging up again. Atout says they don’t have a say in this decision. Bowens and Caster both pleaded to Tony Khan not to book them in another tag match together.
Kyle Fletcher, Lance Archer, and Rocky Romero (w/ Don Callis) vs. Mark Briscoe and Brodido
- The finish of the match saw Brodido hit a double team move on Rocky Romero. Bandido scored the pinfall victory for his team.
Winners: Mark Briscoe and Brodido
Grade: B+
After the match, El Clon distracts Brodido. Kazuchika Okada attacks them from behind as AEW Dynamite goes off the air.
AEW Dynamite Review:
The first two hours of this show were very strong. The final hour was pretty much a mixed bag that I could have done without. While there was nothing wrong with it, it just didn’t feel like it had the same energy and pay-per-view push that the first two hours did. The main event helped push the TNT Title match on Saturday, but that was about it.
I also feel like WrestleDream is missing a match or two from the card to really make it a must-see show. Where’s the Kenny Omega match? What is Mercedes doing? Hopefully, another match or two gets added before Saturday. We’ll see how it goes.
Overall, I enjoyed tonight’s show. It was very good, but it wasn’t great. It failed to get into the A grade tonight, which is unfortunate on a pay-per-view go-home show.
Grade: B+
