Santos Escobar Re-Signs With WWE — Report

Santos Escobar wasn’t a free agent for very long.

Escobar’s WWE contract ran out earlier this week. According to an October 6 report from Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp (via Fightful Select), WWE sources said Escobar’s contract expired at midnight that day. It was noted that while WWE sources also implied that the two sides discussed an extension, it wasn’t something he could confirm.

Escobar was a free agent as of midnight on Tuesday, meaning he could have shown up in AEW immediately. A report from F4WOnline.com’s Dave Meltzer even stated that many in WWE expected him to leave for AEW.

However, that is not the case anymore.

Santos Escobar signed a new WWE contract

According to PWInsider.com‘s Mike Johnson, WWE and Santos Escobar have come to terms on a new deal. It was noted that WWE management listened to Escobar’s creative concerns and made him a “sizeably larger offer than any of their previous overtures.”

Escobar agreed to those terms, and it is believed that the deal was brokered late Tuesday night. It’s unclear when he will be back on television, but Escobar is under WWE contract again.

Escobar has not commented on his new contract. However, he posted a photo of himself wearing a mask while shooting new promotional photos. Prior to joining WWE, Escobar was known as El Hijo del Fantasma. His tenure under the mask was highly decorated, as he is a former CMLL World Middleweight and CMLL World Trios Champion. He is also the longest-reigning AAA World Cruiserweight Champion.

Escobar hasn’t competed on WWE programming since he appeared on the Worlds Collide special with AAA on June 7. He worked two back-to-back WWE Live events at the end of July in Mexico, but has not competed since then. Despite that, he has appeared on SmackDown in a managerial capacity for Legado del Fantasma’s Angel and Berto on the August 1 episode of SmackDown.
