As the leader of Imperium, GUNTHER prides himself on being a ring general, but welcomes the possibility of the group adjusting their on-screen personas to less-serious tones.
Recently speaking with Peter Rosenberg on Cheap Heat, GUNTHER discussed a variety of topics, including the rather serious demeanor of his stable, Imperium.
“We build our livelihood around that,” he said. “Why should we not take it serious? There’s no playing a character or anything like that. That’s just what we are. We express it always in a more extricated way in the ring. But I think that’s why it works and that’s what we thought about it like years ago when we took that as our identity and was like, ‘okay, that’s who we are.’ We just let it all out in the ring and it’s going to be authentic. And that’s what it is.”
Alongside Giovanni Vinci and Ludwig Kaiser, the trio have shaped their identity on bringing class to the squared circle. On the January 23 edition of RAW, the three arrived to the red brand, cutting off the band of “degenerates” known as DX (who were also accompanied by Kurt Angle that night). As Kaiser condemned their usual antics as “nonsense,” GUNTHER asserted they were “making a mockery out of this great sport.”
As of now, it doesn’t appear Imperium will stray from their current characters anytime soon. When asked if he had any interest in adopting a more humorous role, GUNTHER admitted he was open to the idea.
“We did it before in different places — not on that big of a stage, obviously. If it comes natural, it’s definitely possible. I think a lot of people can relate to us and can connect to us. I think I always see it and now we see it when we walk out anywhere, it’s usually the blackout [in the arena]. The music hits, people get excited, and they cheer for a second, but then the light goes on and then everybody goes, ‘[sigh].'”
“I think that’s like a great sign that also shows that deep down they must respect or appreciate what we do in the ring. But also then, we get them back to be like, they don’t look like the guys we cheer in this situation. So, I think’s a good situation.”
