How did Billy Gunn become one of the first backstage signees to All Elite Wrestling? Look no further than Cody Rhodes.
“Daddy Ass” Billy Gunn was a recent guest on AEW Unrestricted with Tony Schiavone and Aubrey Edwards. When asked how he got started at All Elite Wrestling, Gunn revealed that the job opportunity came via a phone call from “The American Nightmare” himself.
“Cody [Rhodes] called me,” Billy Gunn revealed. “Like they called me and said, ‘Hey, we have to have you,’ because I had been fired the fourth time from another place. [laughs] But no, I left over there and was out on the Indies; I was just having fun. For some reason, people still wanted to book me all the time. So I was super busy.
“But they were in the process of doing this; all the main characters were set now with the main characters. We need people around us, and me and Cody have always had a great relationship. They reached out and said, ‘Hey, would you love to be a part of this?’ I went, ‘Where do I sign?'”
These days, Cody is starring in WWE; he won the 2023 Men’s Royal Rumble match, and he is set to headline WrestleMania 39. Meanwhile, Gunn has been paired up with The Acclaimed in recent months, and he previously helped them capture the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
