Mickie James would love to wrestle for WWE and AEW, among other companies, as the IMPACT Knockouts World Champion.
James made history when she competed in the 2021 WWE Women’s Royal Rumble Match during her reign as the Knockouts Champion. One year later, she regained the title at IMPACT Hard To Kill by defeating Jordynne Grace. Now that the gold is back around her waist, James wants to make this run special.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, James discussed her title win. When co-host Mark Henry pitched the idea of James competing for several promotions, including AEW and WWE, and potentially facing Mercedes Mone (formerly known as Sasha Banks), James expressed her excitement.
“I would love that. I would be honored to do that,” James said. “I did say, if I won this championship, that I intend on making this my greatest reign ever, and to become the greatest Knockouts World Champion of all time. In order to be a world champion, it needs to be represented worldwide. I think IMPACT, they’ve been so gracious to me, and I think it’s no secret that they always are down to do great business. They always try to do what’s best for the company and really have an open mind when it comes to a lot of things and are pretty progressive about a lot of things. You talk about that match with Sasha, that’s one match that we never got at WWE. We never had a singles match. It’s one thing that we always wanted. Now with her there at STARDOM and New Japan, I mean that opportunity, to be able to finally have that singles match that we both always wanted, would be incredible. To be able to go against someone at AEW, that’s a door I’ve never walked through before. But a Britt Baker or Jamie Hayter, she’s the champ, you know. I love Jamie Hayter. She’s fantastic. Or someone like Jade Cargill, who is an anomaly, she is an attraction. That would be something of two parallel universes, two different worlds colliding. That would be so cool.
“But also I was blessed to be able to go back to WWE for the Rumble last time, but there’s a lot of women [there]. There’s Charlotte, there’s Bayley, there’s Becky, people I’ve really never had a chance to be me in that ring and show what I could truly do. That match with Asuka was probably my greatest match when I was back at WWE the last time, and I had some really incredible moments and got to do WrestleMania with Alexa. But I didn’t really have that opportunity to present Hardcore Country until the Rumble but also to remind people of who Mickie James truly is in that ring. That’s one thing about this time at IMPACT, I feel like I’ve reminded a lot of people and earned that respect back on a serious note. I would pray for something like that. I would really like to make this title reitns something remarkable and something special because I don’t know how many more I got left in me.”
James went on to note that she wants to a champion’s champion, as she wouldn’t necessarily want to lose, but she would love to have the opportunity to face new opponents. She again stated that she wants to make her title reign special, both for herself and for the fans.
“It’s not about wins or losses. Obviously I want to be a champion’s champion,” James said. “I don’t want to lose, but to be able to have the opportunity to test myself against a whole new class of women, when there’s opportunities now that were never available before. It’s exciting. It’s so exciting, and it would be a really good, not only a wrap-up to my career or whatever that is, but this title run to be really, really special for me and for the fans. I think it would be an opportunity to give the fans something different and something unexpected all the way around.”
