Al Snow and his mannequin head have come to life once again in a new comic book.
Beginning in ECW in the last 1990s, Snow adopted a mannequin head into his on-screen gimmick. Head would serve as not just a prop, but also a projection of his “crazy” thoughts. Now, Al Snow has animated their adventures in comic book form. Written by Eric Watkins, Broken Icon Comics cultivated a story “that will satisfy wrestling fans, adventure and comedy fans.”
The latest comic in the series, “The Adventures of Al Snow and Head”, will implement a gimmick that he originally pitched in WWE, called “The Swarm.” In speaking with Steve Fall of NBC Sports Boston, Snow detailed the plan, simultaneously revealing an appearance by a former IMPACT Wrestling / current OVW star in Jessie Godderz.
“Then I’m going to have a team up with the next issue. [It] is Adventures with Al Snow and Head, is a team up. It’s set back in like the thirties or forties with Jessie Godderz, Mr. Spectacular from Big Brother fame, and the old, old circus type of way with a gimmick that we were going to do in WWE but Vince said no–which was it’s called “The Swarm”. Which is where I have little people that are like little identical clones of me that all under my command and the attack people at my command.”
The quests don’t stop there though. Al Snow continued on to reveal upcoming cameos from other pro wrestling stars in the series, including Scotty 2 Hotty and Tommy Dreamer.
“The Adventures of Al Snow and Head, I team up with Scotty 2 Hotty in a very John Wick-ish assassin-type thing. Then another one with Tommy Dreamer, it’s set back in prohibition era times and the gangster era and it’s very gritty and very dark. There’s a horror comic that we did. So, each one of them are completely different and unique.”
Broken Icon Comics previously released two issues of “The Ballad of Al Snow and Head”. The first issue took place in a post-apocalyptic world, displaying Snow’s adventures working at a detective agency.
Snow and Chavo Guerrero recently spoke with WrestleZone about the second book, The Adventures of Al Snow and Head ft Chavo Guerrero Jr. Snow explained why he recruited Chavo and said it was an easy pick.
“Eric [Watkins at Broken Icon Comics] approached me about wanting to do the old Marvel team-up comic books and asked if I had anybody that I could suggest. I immediately thought of Chavo [Guerrero] because I remembered Pepe thought it would be cool if we were to do a western story. So, Chavo and Pepe and me and Head. So, we sat down and wrote, and it’s a pretty cool story and the artwork is just absolutely amazing. One of the little details is whenever you see Chavo with Pepe, there’s a little cloud and you can’t tell he’s on the horse, it looks like he’s riding a real horse.
“They’re a lot of fun and it’s a different kind of story and they’re wrestling characters but kind of reimagined in a different light and the people working on it are heavy hitters in the comic book industry and I’m just blown away by some of the amazing artists and the inkers and the letterers that have worked on this book. It’s very flattering and when you see the artwork and the quality of the books that Eric put together, it’s really creative.”
Chavo then pointed out that pro wrestling and comic books are a great combination, and said that the Western theme made too much sense where joining the project was a no-brainer.
