With Brock Lesnar winning the Universal Championship at WWE Crown Jewel, it now means that the main event of WWE Survivor Series 2018 will see the “Beast Incarnate” taking on AJ Styles once again. The duo first faced off on last year’s event, as both held their respective titles back in 2017. It was a great match, and they’re geared up to do it again. However, the match does introduce an interesting dilemma going forward: who will win the match?
The Upside to Brock Lesnar vs AJ Styles 2
If there’s one immediate upside it’s that WWE Survivor Series 2018 has one heck of a main event. While some have criticized Lesnar’s matches, nearly everyone praised their first encounter last year. Styles was booked strongly and got in plenty of offense, so it makes sense that the rematch will feature both in top form.
It’s also a chance for WWE to cement Styles as one of the best WWE Champions ever if they have him get a win over Lesnar. These Champion versus Champion matches should feel like a big deal, and this one certainly does. This would be Styles’ biggest win as champ so far, and would be a great notch on his record.
The Downside to Brock Lesnar vs AJ Styles 2
Brock Lesnar is not someone that loses matches often, and that makes a lot of sense. After all, Lesnar is a certified real-life badass. He’s a high level amateur wrestler and a world class mixed martial artist that can compete at the highest level. He’s a once in a generation talent that also looks every bit of the part as he’s a massive man.
So, it was quite logical when he went to the limit against AJ Styles last year, but wound up getting the win in a great match. It was one of those fabled matches where both wrestlers look better afterwards, even the loser. However, what does another loss possibly do for Styles at this point? He’s held the WWE title for nearly a year and the lost against Lesnar is really his only blemish. If he loses then it just makes the WWE Championship look like such a lesser belt than the Universal Championship that Lesnar holds.
There is a possible way out of this, as Brock’s last opponent (Braun Strowman) could interfere and cause him the match. That would allow for Styles to even the score against Lesnar, but it would also taint a match that could be truly great. Either way, I look forward to seeing what WWE does later this month. Both athletes can put on an amazing match, and it has the potential to be something great.
