WWE Changes Planned Name for NXT’s EVIL Despite Filing Trademark — REPORT

A notable shift has taken place behind the scenes in WWE. The company altered its planned identity for a newly debuted NXT star — even after a trademark had already been filed.

The change didn’t come with much warning, but it didn’t go unnoticed either.

For a character built on mystery, the name switch added another twist before the first official match even takes place.

WWE drops “Nox Raijin” name for EVIL, introduces Naraku on NXT

According to Sean Ross Sapp, internal materials as recently as Sunday still listed former NJPW star EVIL under the name “Nox Raijin,” a trademark WWE had filed on April 28. However, that plan changed quickly, as the May 5 episode of WWE NXT revealed his new identity as Naraku.

The adjustment appears to have been made at the last minute, swapping out a name that combined mythological influences for one rooted in Japanese meaning. “Naraku” translates to “hell” or “abyss,” aligning closely with the dark persona EVIL established during his time in Japan.

The vignette that introduced the new name also reinforced his character direction. Speaking about his past accomplishments, Naraku stated that he had conquered opponents and titles in his homeland, but emphasized that “a warrior’s spirit is never satisfied.” He then labeled NXT as a “land of opportunity,” signaling his next chapter.

Naraku’s arrival has already made waves. He debuted on April 28 by confronting Tony D’Angelo, delivering a symbolic warning that set up a potential title clash. The message was clear — he’s not easing in, he’s stepping straight into the spotlight.

Despite the rebrand, reports indicate he is still listed internally under his real name, Takaaki Watanabe, as WWE completes the transition.

Naraku is scheduled to make his in-ring debut on May 12, adding another layer to NXT’s evolving title picture.
