CM Punk recently opened up about his WWE return, and his comments revealed something surprising. He admitted that things could have been very different. Especially if one moment had happened earlier in his career.
Punk made his shocking return at Survivor Series: WarGames in 2023. The moment happened in his hometown of Chicago. It marked his first WWE appearance in nearly a decade. Since then, he has been a constant part of the main event scene.
He also achieved a major milestone after returning. He finally main evented WrestleMania. He faced Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins in a triple threat match. That was a moment he had chased for years.
Speaking with SHAK Wrestling, CM Punk explained how he feels about that achievement.
“I think the juice is worth the squeeze right? It was probably sweeter because it was something that I had like acquiesced in my brain that was never going to happen. So, coming back and being able to climb that mountain and plant my flag on the top of it, it made it much sweeter. Recency bias though, it’s still pretty fresh. It was last year. I’m still riding that high, I’m riding that wave.”
CM Punk admits he might not have returned if he main evented WrestleMania during his first run
CM Punk then made a big admission. He said, “If it had happened 10, 15 years ago, there’s probably a big part of me that might have never come back because there wasn’t anything on the horizon for me to conquer, no mountain to climb.”
Even now, he still values WrestleMania highly. He said, “Same thing. WrestleMania is and always will be the pinnacle, top shelf show in pro wrestling. Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, those are the guys that were always talking about and hovering around the main event when I was watching.”
“And I kind of developed that same attitude, like the best guys main event the biggest show, so to do it once was sweet, do it back-to-back years. It’s like being on the cover of the video game for a second time, it’s still a big deal to me.” [H/T: Wrestletalk]
Now, Punk is set for another huge moment. He will face Roman Reigns again at WrestleMania 42. This time, it is one-on-one. And once again, he will be in the main event.
