Drew McIntyre won the WWE Championship for a second time after defeating Cody Rhodes this afternoon on SmackDown.
Tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown aired live on Netflix internationally from Germany ahead of tonight’s broadcast on the USA Network. In the main event of the evening, Drew McIntyre defeated Cody Rhodes in a Three Stages of Hell match to become WWE Champion for a third time. You can check out how this finish went down by clicking here.
This title change doesn’t appear to be the original plan heading into the show, as reports came out this afternoon that there was an internal push for McIntyre to win this title today. So what exactly went down that led to McIntyre leaving Germany with the WWE Championship?
According to BodySlam+, which broke the news about the internal push earlier today, is reporting that much like back at Wrestlepalooza, both Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre pitched for the WWE Championship to change hands.
Unlike back in September, WWE decided this was the right moment to pull the trigger and put the title on McIntyre in front of a very pro-McIntyre crowd in Berlin. With a mini tournament of sorts set to take place to determine McIntyre’s challenger at the Royal Rumble, Rhodes is now on the outside looking in when it comes to the title picture.
Stay tuned to WrestleZone for more information.
This episode of SmackDown will air on the USA Network later this evening.
