Cody Rhodes Considered Going Back To School After 2016 WWE Exit

Cody Rhodes thought about getting a degree after WWE exit in 2016.

Cody Rhodes’ WWE return is widely considered one of the most illustrious comebacks in company history. The American Nightmare left in 2016 to reinvent himself as a top free agent. He worked across ROH, TNA, and New Japan Pro Wrestling. One thing led to another, and Rhodes eventually became one of the founding members of All Elite Wrestling.

Fast forward to 2022, Rhodes departed AEW and made his WWE return at WrestleMania 38. It was there that he had a show-stealing match against Seth Rollins. It took nearly two more years for him to finally capture his first WWE world title. And while he now sits at the top of the mountain, that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been honest about the self-doubt he experienced leading up to his return.

Cody Rhodes recalls thinking about going back to school after WWE exit

Speaking on the All The Smoke podcast, Rhodes was asked if he ever doubted himself during his time away from WWE between 2016 and 2022. Here’s what the Undisputed WWE Champion had to say:

“Oh my gosh, all the time,” Rhodes admitted. “I thought about going and getting a degree because in Georgia, if you have a degree, you can be a wrestling coach. (Growing up) I was really into amateur wrestling. I was the only one in my family who did folkstyle, freestyle, Greco-Roman. I thought I’d be a really good coach.

“And I never thought about a plan B, so that was the first time plan B came up. You’re married at the time, no children just yet, but looking to start a family, and you can’t start a family with just nothing, you know, or a little bit of savings here and there from my time with WWE. But I doubted myself. I feel like I doubted myself every step of the journey.”
