Sonya Deville Clarifies Whether She’s Retired From Pro Wrestling

Sonya Deville is done with pro wrestling… for now.

Deville (Daria Berenato) was a guest on Insight with Chris Van Vliet. During the interview, she spoke about leaving WWE after her contract was not renewed. Berenato tries not to think about why it was or was not renewed, but said it felt like her career was in a “rut” and it was just time to move on.

“I felt a little like I needed a change of pace, and I didn’t know what it was. I never would have left on my own merit. But I felt a little bit like I was in a loop, kind of in Purgatory, like I wanted an opportunity,” she explained. “I got the title with Chelsea finally, then the injury, got back from the injury, was finally getting my footing again in the ring after coming back from the ACL [tear], and then I got released. So it’s hard to look back and regret any of it, though, because I really feel like everything happens for a reason.”

The former Sonya Deville said she still doesn’t feel like she processed getting released. However, she hasn’t sat around and sulked about it, either. She said it feels strange to not say she wrestles for WWE, but she did admit that she’s done wrestling for the time being.

Sonya Deville is retired… for now

“Definitely for now. Never say never. But right now I feel at peace with that,” she stated. “I’m not gonna lie, and I haven’t said this, but it almost is like an open wound, and if I think about wrestling somewhere else, it’s like I was so loyal to the company, it was my only home from 21 years old to 31. I’m a ride or die type of person in general. So it’s weird to even think about doing that, but not there.”

Sonya Deville was with WWE since 2015. She was one of the thirteen finalists for the WWE Tough Enough season 6 in 2015. Berenato signed a contract with WWE later that year and debuted as Sonya Deville in NXT. During her tenure, Deville won the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship with Chelsea Green. She also served as an assistant authority figure to General Manager Adam Pearce for a time.

Despite pausing her in-ring career, Berenato continues to make non-wrestling appearances. She recently adopted a new moniker after her WWE release. Berenato also joined the commentary team for the Invicta 62 mixed martial arts event.
