One of the popular women’s tag teams in the Divas Era was the team of Michelle McCool and Layla, LayCool. Recently, former WWE Women’s Champion Layla revealed how CM Punk came up with the tag team name, LayCool.
While speaking to MuscleMan Malcolm on his Muscle Memory podcast, Layla revealed that it was indeed CM Punk who came up with the tag team name LayCool for her and Michelle McCool.
“Yes, he [CM Punk] did actually. We were outside, I don’t remember what state or anything like that. I remember we were hanging over like, it looks like a laundry hamper. And we, Michelle [McCool] and I were standing there. And we were like, ‘Okay, let’s think of a name.’ And he gets it on paper and he’s like this, ‘L-A-Y…’ Because we were trying to say Cool-Lay, la la la… And then we were like, ‘No, that’s not going to work.’
“So, then he just wrote Lay Cool. And then we were like, ‘Yeah! There you go perfect.’ But it would have been the other way but just inappropriate. So, I feel that was a better choice. That was a better way to go,” Layla said.
One major part of LayCool’s appeal was the “split” WWE Championship they both carried while McCool was champion. McCool credited Batista for coming up with the idea. Layla also recently revealed plans for Vickie Guerrero to win the WWE Women’s Championship.
