Anthony Bowens Explains The Meaning Behind His New Gimmick and Name In AEW

This past Sunday night was the AEW Dynasty pay-per-view. During the show’s Zero Hour, ‘Platinum’ Max Caster issued an open challenge. The wrestler who answered the challenge was none other than Caster’s former tag team partner, the self-proclaimed Pride of Pro Wrestling Anthony Bowens. Bowens defeated Caster in under one minute. Following the match, Bowens addressed the press at the post-show media scrum.

During the media scrum, WrestleZone’s own Bill Pritchard asked Anthony Bowens about his nicknames and gimmicks, most importantly about his Five Tool Player gimmick, which is a name Bowens used prior to joining AEW, including during his time with WrestlePro.

“Yeah, the Five Tool Player was something that I was doing before I joined AEW. And the whole Acclaimed rise happened. It’s something that’s been a part of me. Five Tool Player is a term for a Baseball Superstar and I am wrestling’s Five Tool Player. The perfect combination of power, athleticism, intelligence, the look, and the IT factor. And it’s something that I am really excited to bring forth. And I hope people really enjoy it.

“The Pride of Pro Wrestling, I think it speaks for itself. I represent this company very proudly. I am out doing everything that I can to try and bring this company into the mainstream. And of course my LGBTQ+ activism. I think it’s a beautiful play on words and it was a moment that I have been dreaming about for a very very long time.”

Anthony Bowens thanks Tony Khan and Billy Gunn

Bowens also thanked Tony Khan for being able to get him the rights to have Underground by James Addiction as his entrance theme song.

“And I’m lucky enough to have the presentation that I wanted to put forth. Tony [Khan] was able to get the song that I’ve been wanting to come out to since college. I heard… It’s Underground by James Addiction, I heard it and like this is the perfect professional wrestling song. It just fits me like a glove. So, thank you for that.”

He also shared that WWE Hall of Famer Billy Gunn has helped him and the Acclaimed in their success.

“So, we were able to get that, and of course, I can move on as well, having Billy with me. Billy [Gunn] has been, I always say he’s been a guiding light for us ever since he joined the Acclaimed. And really helped steer the ship upwards and towards success,” Anthony Bowens said.
