Alexa Bliss Credits The Big Comfy Couch, Cult Documentaries As Inspiration For Her Darker Character

When paired with The Fiend, Alexa Bliss intertwined her childhood into her darker character.

From 2020 through last summer, Alexa Bliss and The Fiend dominated television with their eerie mannerisms and presentation on WWE programming. Bliss transformed from “The Goddess” to a darker, somewhat child-like version of her former self. In speaking on Out Of Character with Ryan Satin, Alexa Bliss cited some sources of inspiration for that character, including The Big Comfy Couch.

The Big Comfy Couch was a Canadian-produced children’s television show that featured a clown named Loonette and her doll, Molly, who helped solve problems from the comfort of the titular couch. The show was originally produced in the early 1990s but gained a new following in syndication through the 2000s.

“I jumped fully in. The amount of cult documentaries and the amount of different scary movies and things I would watch. So for me, I wanted to have my character have a bit of an identity crisis. So with that, that’s why I reverted to a child’s mentality because for me, personally, to get real about it–when I had my eating disorders, it was a traumatic thing for me. My brain went back to a child-like defense mechanism.”

“So I kind of took part of that into my character, I remember thinking, ‘what do I like watching as a child? I like watching The Big Comfy Couch.’ So I got the concept of having Lilly from the girl from the Comfy Couch’s doll Molly.

“I took a lot of my childhood things that I loved and brought that into the character. Then [I] also took part of the movie Orphan where the girl is 30 posing as a child and took that into the character as well. So, there are a lot of things of my real interests and real things as a child that I actually brought into the dark Alexa character.”

Alexa Bliss returned to WWE programming earlier this year following a five-month hiatus following Extreme Rules fall. Now, she resumes a new character on Monday Night RAW, still alongside her doll, Lilly.
