Bracket Busters
By Ross Berman
The white guys have taken a blade to my brackets. From Chase Owens upsetting Juice Robinson, to Colt Cabana getting a sneaky pin on Togi Makabe, to Mikey Nicholls taking out the massive HIKULEO, the first round has been loaded with gaijin competitors getting shock wins, much to the dismay of degenerate-gambles and wannabe-mystics like myself. It’s a wild New Japan Cup and its just getting started.
As it stands, most of the major contenders have to face a tough gaijin talent, en route to winning the cup. Kazuchika Okada has to get through Mikey Nicholls, and either Will Ospreay or Lance Archer. Kota Ibushi has to get through Zack Sabre Jr. Both have had to beat a foreigner, on either’s way to facing the Ultimate Foreigner in “Switchblade” Jay White.
It’s only going to get wilder. The second round is a mix of insane matchups, big vs. small, Ace vs. Coach, Golden Star vs. Technical Wizard, Cabana vs. Yano. This year’s tournament is many things. It is not predictable.
